The remarks that Myanmar’s army chief Min Aung Hlaing made, saying that refugees returning to Myanmar from Bangladesh will not be allowed to go beyond a certain region and they have to stay in ideal villages built for them—are unprecedented and unsupportive to the Rohingya rehabilitation process. His comment or stance is contradictory to the public opinion about the Rohingyas worldwide and Kofi Annan commission’s report. This idea of his is not supportive for resolving the Rohingya crisis. This kind of mentality will hinder Rohingya repatriation. He called the Rohigyas to be Bangali, but why so, what the logic is behind the comment- is his personal explanation. But Bangladesh and even the international community do not think likewise. The Rohingyas are the inhabitants, citizens and people of Myanmar’s Rakhine state. It cannot be in anyway logical that they will become citizen of Bangladesh by only speaking in Bangla language. We are taking this as his personal opinion. The Rohingyas’ identity will not change due to his remarks. I think after the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) conference, the pressure to repatriate the Rohingyas may increase. It will help build public opinion worldwide, I guess.
