4 Thousand Rohingyan Refugees Carry HIV

    Alarming facts were uncovered after analyzing the health survey by the United Nations, regarding HIV or AIDS among the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, said DIGS additional general director Dr. Ehteshamul Haque Chowdhury. The national statistic of Myanmar show that, out of total 10 lacs Rohingyan refugees, 4 thousand must carry the virus of AIDS. Thus, due to such huge number, it has become very difficult for the Bangladesh government to handle this issue.So far, 79 Rohingyas were identified of having the HIV. 51 were diagnosed in Myanmar. Unless, these Rohingyas are quarantined soon, spreading of HIV might turn into an epidemic within Bangladesh, shared concerns Cox’s Bazar civil-surgeon Dr. Abdus Salam. Rohingyan refugees had been instructed to visit 3 public hospitals near Rohingya camps, for free HIV diagnosis privilege. But, most of them are not willing about it, informed an employee involved with the National AIDS/STD Programme.
