Most folk traditions flourished throughout the country including the capital Dhaka has been dying due to absence of proper care and preservation, reports Somoy TV. In some cases, the allegation is being raised even after taking initiatives for protection of folk traditions. Artisans claim that the loss of interest in work is due to lack of opportunity, honor and low prices.
According to Somoy TV’s report, Nakshi katha which is a traditional handicraft in Bangladesh and Jamdani which is one of the finest muslin textiles of Bengal, produced in the country for centuries has lost it’s appeal along with the Brass metal industry. Including Jamdani, UNESCO has recently declared 5 other crafts as “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”
In the era of globalization, traditional heritage and folk culture is losing the battle against technological advancements. Experts suggest that immediate steps should be taken to preserve these crafts in order to establish Bangladesh with dignity in front of the world.
