She is only nine. But we are not talking about her biological age here. We are talking about an era increasingly influenced by the new generation of “Influencers” who dominates the social media, thus our entire online/offline planet, specially, in the West part of it.
Lil Tay, is the “darling” of this new kind of influencers, meaning people who make money, one way or another, by amassing a following in the social-media universe.
The old school influencers were mostly seen in Instagram and Facebook. They built a huge group of followers and posted contents regarding their everyday lifestyles and the products and services they would use. The “older generation” of influencers hoped to eventually get paid to post content for a wellness start-up. Their lives were/ are, too perfect to believe.
The new generation of influencers are taking a different rather opposite direction than the older influencers. The new influencers tend to be younger and make their mark not on Instagram but YouTube.
They look straight at the camera and make statements meant only to shock. They are fourth-graders, who curse. They are white but speak in “blaccent”. They usually have face tattoos to make people stop and can’t resist to stare at them. They repeat catchphrases — like Lil Tay, “youngest flexer of the century” — to give viewers a “mnemonic” that would make people to remember them.
Influencers like Lil Tay has the expertise to market them as the living, breathing memes, blips of pop culture that live in ten-second clips or viral photos.
In case you are wondering, Yes, she has an Instagram account. Lil Tay’sInstagram name is @liltay.
Lil Tay used to have a Twitter account, but it got suspended due to her frequent use of obscene language and use of the word “n*****”. Though According to Instagram’s rules, users must be 13 to open an account. It has been it is her half-brother,
Jason, who is 16, has been shooting her videos and running her account. Jason is the one who “created” the Lil Tay persona/ brand. He took the recent social media trend on Instagram and you tube , “stage-mom”, — moms who makes Instagram and You tube contents for their underage kids– to an unprecedented level and has been credited with introducing a new trend, stage-brother.
