Desk report: Most of the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) buses running in the capital are in a dilapidated condition with broken windscreens or shattered windows, shabby seats and dents and scrapes all over their bodies, reports The Daily Sun.
Though most of its own buses are found in a rundown condition, BRTA has declared to take stern action against dilapidated, unfit, broken, shabby and shattered vehicles in the capital after September 30. Transport sector insiders said the government should present BRTA buses as a model to private sector transport operators. But the reality is something else as BRTC is operating mostly with rundown vehicles.
According to sources, many BRTC buses have been leased out to different private and autonomous organisations. The condition of these buses is better than regular BRTC buses operating in the capital.
BRTC buses often break down on the road. Rundown BRTC double-decker buses are in a bad shape and vulnerable to accidents.
However, BRTC officials claimed that their buses are in good condition.
“We have completely withdrawn the rundown buses. Buses with mechanical errors are being repaired before putting back into the road,” BRTC officials said.
But rundown BRTC buses are still seen running on Mohammadpur-Notun Bazar and Motijheel – Abdullahpur route. The drivers and their assistants of those buses do not consider this as an issue.
