Kabir Humayun: Two people died and nine others sustained burn injuries in a fire incident that broke out at state-run Meghna Oil depot in Khalishpur industrial area of Khulna city yesterday.
The victims were Kamal Sharif, 55, a meterman, and Razu, 25, a helper of the lorry, said Md Abdullah, assistant general manager of the depot, reports The Daily Star
Moshraf Hossain, officer in-charge of Khalishpur Police Station, said eleven injured people were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared two dead.
The explosion took place around 11:00am when oil lorries were being loaded with octane and diesel from the depot, the OC went on citing primary reports.
On information, five units of fire fighters from Daulatpur and Khulna rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour of frantic efforts.
No fire station was set up yet nearby the state-run oil depots of Meghna, Jamuna and Padma despite repeated demands, said Faruq Hassan, a local resident of Kashipur area.
Contacted, Rezaul Karim, assistant director of local fire service, criticised the negligence of officials and lack of fire safety measures at the depot.
