Nationwide war on drugs snuffs out 94 lives as yet

    Sayeed Muhammad: The ongoing anti-narcotics clampdown claimed the lives of 10 more people, mostly suspected drug peddlers, in parts of the country yesterday, raising the death toll to at least 94 over the last two weeks.
    According to The Daily Star, two were killed in Comilla, Pirojpur and Satkhira each, while one was reported dead in Jhenidah, Munshiganj, Natore and Dhaka apiece.
    In Dhaka, Naju Sarder, an accused in 22 cases, was killed in a “gunfight” with Detective Branch of police at Chalantika slum of Mirpur.
    In Cumilla, 55-year-old Nuru and Enamul Haque Dolon, 40, were killed in two “gun battles” with police in Sadar Dakkhin and Debidwar upazilas respectively.
    The law enforcers also recovered 60 kg cannabis, 100 pieces yaba, two firearms and two bullets from the two spots.
    In Pirojpur, two drug-traders Wahiduzzaman and Mizanur Rahman were killed in “trade of bullets” with law enforcers in Sadar and Mathbaria upazilas.
    In Satkhira, police recovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two suspected drug peddlers– Khalilur Rahman alias Puti Sardar, 40, and the other as Emdadul Karigar, 45,– from Agunpur area at Alipur union in Sadar upazila around 6:30am.
    In Natore, Abdul Khalek, 36, was killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in Singra upazila, from where one pistol, bullets, and 853 yaba pills were recovered.
