UK to provide additional £70 mn humanitarian support for Rohingyas

Tahmeed Taha: Ahead of the looming cyclone and monsoon season, fresh humanitarian support for the Rohingya people living in Cox’s Bazar has been pledged by The United Kingdom yesterday, alongside help to vaccinate almost one million people against deadly cholera. By the latest announcement of an additional £70 million of humanitarian support, better protection for hundreds of thousands of persecuted Rohingya people during this dangerous time will help to be ensured, reports UNB. Since 25 August 2017, £129 million has been contributed to the crisis by The UK. £70 million, as part of this, announced yesterday is a new package of support, which was not previously allocated to this humanitarian programme. The British High Commission in Dhaka said that in the coming weeks as the rainy season begins, conditions in the huge camps near the Myanmar border are set to become more life-threatening which could wash away the fragile and cramped makeshift shelters that are exposed to the elements and cause fatal diseases to spread more rapidly. Medication, sturdier shelters, food, clean water and support for women to give birth safely are being provided by UK aid. From the global cholera vaccine stockpile, UK aid backed vaccines have been sourced, which is funded by Gavi. The government of Bangladesh implemented the campaign, working alongside the World Health Organisation. The campaign started on Sunday.
