Rohingya camps lack basic facilities: Sultana Kamal

    Rohingya Camps in Cox’s Bazar lack basic facilities of food, shelter and health, said rights activist Sultana Kamal on Monday.While addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity in Dhaka, the rights activists said that there are continued risk of human trafficking at the refugee camps. She was briefing journalists about a recent fact finding mission on Rohingya refugees by South Asian Human Rights (SAHR) – reports The Daily Star.Also the chairman of SAHR Sultana Kamal came up with her remarks following a six-member team led by her visit at three Rohingya refugee camps at Kutupalong, Balu Khali and Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar from December 7 to 11.An estimation of 640,000 of the Muslim minority have fled into Bangladesh since late August after Myanmar’s military launched sweeping crackdown on the Rohingyas in Rakhine state.“There is a lack of access to clean and potable water in the camps. Instances of tube-wells being dug too close to toilets have led to acute watery diarrhea outbreak in some parts of the camps,” states a press note SAHR issued.SAHR urged the Bangladeshi government to take promising measures to prevent the influence of extremist forces and human traffickers in the refugee camps. Also, it urged the Myanmar government to create a conducive environment for the safe return of refugees by ending all violence and committing to end discrimination.
