We go on diets to make sure our skin looks flawless and that our waistline remains slim. We think about our hearts and eat less cholesterol, and cut down on smokes to keep our lungs clean. However, do any of really try to keep our livers healthy? The liver helps in detoxifying chemicals, metabolizing drugs, and making various proteins. It also secretes bile. The liver is an essential part of our body and it is critical for us to make sure it functions fine.
Different foods have different functions, and some of them are not really good for our body. Below is a list of such foods that is bad for our liver.
• CORN SYRUP WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE: Most soft drinks are made of over 55% fructose. Fructose consumption of this level can cause some serious liver damage. Other foods with high fructose content that you should stay away from are packaged desserts, flavored yoghurts, crackers, white bread and energy bars.
• FOOD THAT CONTAIN PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED OILS: Or otherwise known as trans-fats can be found in almost everything we eat, since all we eat is basically processed food. Low Density Lipids from trans-fats starts to build up in our liver which increases the risk of liver disease. When your liver has more than 5% fat, you know that you are in the high-risk zone.
• SODIUM: In case you are susceptible to fluid retention, you might want to steer clear of high sodium foods because too much salt can create surplus fluid in your liver. You know how there is this thing called “tasting salt” that our moms practically use in everything? Well that is actually a highly concentrated form of salt and it is highly toxic. Some food you would want to avoid includes canned foods and soya sauce.
• FRIED FOOD: Yeah, we all know this is bad for our liver, but how many of us know that eating too much French fries or deep Fried chicken wings can cause a condition similar to Hepatitis.
• ALCOHOL: With all the TV advertisements and what not, it is about time we realize that the daily dose of red wine might actually be killing us. Alcohol can harm our intestine which in turn will allow the toxins from our gut bacteria leak into the liver. These toxins can also cause scarring and inflammation.
