There are few things in this world that can put my heart to ease and ironically, a good old horror TV show is sometimes all I need to break away from the horrors in real life: like meeting deadlines or dropping my oreo in milk. I have to admit, I joined the American Horror Story (AHS) bandwagon quite late but make no mistake, I was done watching four seasons in a week.
AHS follows an anthology format where the characters, timelines and storylines undergo dramatic changes. And boy does the story change. The versatility of the stories and the actors is what played an integral part in gluing me to my screen as the myriad of horrors unfolded.
The series kicked off with Murder House in the first season. The story follows a family as they move into a haunted house and then come in contact with the former deceased residents. Very cliché, right? Well wait till the backstories unfold and you’re at the edge of your seats.
The second season, titled Asylum is in my opinion their best season till date. As the name suggests, the characters and the plot centers around an asylum run by the Catholic Church. The season was all about torture, gore and ofcourse our favorite dish in the horror platter: possession. Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson were absolutely instrumental in their roles in making this season worthy of applause. And the twists, oh the ungodly twists.
The producers of the show then moved onto a new direction and hence Coven was conceived. The third season had more of a Mean Girls meets Salem feel to it but oh well, the story was still brilliantly carried out even though there were a few weak moments. Overall, it might not have been the best in terms of storyline but it had its fair share of crazy moments.
Even though I was a bit put-off by the fourth season, Freakshow had me all excited about AHS again with a plethora of twists and turns coming to light in every episode. The fifth, however was a bit disappointing given the heights this show has reached. Hotel started off really strong but it just lost its appeal somewhere along the way with all the subplots. The main plot was still very solid though. The only upsetting thing about it was that they branched this story into way to many subplots which eventually rendered the entire story impossible to contain.
With the announcement of the sixth season, I have a feeling that this season might actually be better. The producers and scriptwriters seem to possess the ability to learn from their mistakes, which is such a rare quality these days. So I’m just here with my fingers crossed waiting to be scared off my socks again as the production for the new season begins.
