One of the best remedies to the horrible feeling of “not having anything to do,” or the feeling of boredom in general is finding a good hobby. With the plethora of possible activities available, it is easy to get confused as to what hobby will suit a certain person. Luckily, though, a few activities are there that are liked by many, simply on the basis that they are so interesting. Here are a few of them:
1. Reading
Reading is probably the oldest hobby there is. Before the age of smart phones, internet, television and most other forms of modern entertainment, there were books. People would spend most of their free time with them. However, much of that has changed since then with many people disillusioned to the concept of reading books. That however does not change the fact that reading is still one of best ways to spend time. When the writing is good, it can take you to a place far away and completely envelop you in the words being read. It is a pity that reading is not as highly regarded as before, but it is definitely one of the more profound ways to spend time. After all, knowledge is power.
2. Learning a Foreign Language
Learning a new language is a bit challenging at times, but it yields great rewards. It can open up an entirely new culture to you. Learning French for example can help you keep in touch with French people and culture. It can even help you enjoy books, film and music in that foreign language. Being bilingual was scientifically proven to also help better develop the brain. It can also be used to impress other people. Imagine being out on a date in an Italian restaurant and then ordering your food in fluent Italian when the waiter comes by. If that doesn’t impress your date I don’t know what will.
3. Learning a Musical Instrument
Learning to play music is much like learning a foreign language, which makes sense since music is often termed a “universal language.” Learning to play an instrument does not only do well to hone your skills on that instrument, but it also opens your ears to subtle details in other music. It helps you further appreciate the songs that seemed so simple before but had so much going on behind the scenes. Not only that, but playing music has something special which can’t quite be explained. It’s like people have this thing inside them that wants to get out and the only way it can get out and be expressed is through music. When it is finally expressed though, the feeling is euphoric.
4. Programming
The world moves on computers these days, so what better to pick up than programming? Learning a programming language can help you delve in to the world of software design. It can teach you how the computer or any modern day device operates. It can also teach you how to make games, phone applications, websites, and so much more. Give it a shot, and who knows, you might be the next Mark Zuckerberg waiting to step out into the limelight.
