Ministry of Food imported metric tons of rice & wheat this year, in order to compensate for the crop losses due to floods. Importing deals of 6 lacs metric tons of rice still in the process. But that is, to cover up for the 9.1 lacs metric tons rice lacking.
Government granaries have 1.49 lacs metric tons of wheat & 2.76 lacs metric tons of rice stored. 52.88 thousand metric tons of grains already been distributed. Even after that, they are failing to bring stability in grain-market price. Therefore, Ministry of Food called for a discussion meeting to determine their next possible steps today, for the welfare of general public.
Though, the numbers suggest that, the storage has half the amount than last fiscal year of 2016-17. Also, the government estimated their initial importing steps would result in 6% decrease in price by May 2017. Rather it went up by 13%.
Later, farmers & mill-owners were queried for the collection of seasonal Boro rice. Mill owners made a deal for supplying 2.62 lacs metric tons rice. So far, 1.9 lacs metric tons were supplied, by 8th of this month. Authorities hoping that, rest would be collected by the end of this month.
