DOT Desk: Dhaka Uni-versity Film Society held the 125th World Film Manifestation Programme on fantasy films at three different venues in the capital from December 6 to 8, reports The anew Age.
Organised in association with Goethe-Institut Bangladesh and Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, the three-day programme screened six local, German and French fantasy films.
The programme began on Sunday at Goethe-Institut Bangladesh with screening of German horror film ‘Nosferatu’.
Directed by FW Murnau, the 1922 film is one of the earliest silver screen portrayals of vampires. Directed by Wim Wenders, the film features invisible, immortal angels who populate Berlin and
listen to the thoughts of its human inhabitants, comforting those who are in distress.
The second day of the programme was held at Alliane Francaise de Dhaka where two French fantasy films ‘The Exterminating Angel’ and ‘The City of Lost Children’ were screened.
Directed by Luis Bunuel, The Exterminating Angel is labeled as a surrealist film featuring a posh dinner party from where guests find themselves unable to leave.
The City of Lost Children, directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, features a malicious scientist kidnapping children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process.
The second day also featured a discussion on fantasy films, its past and recent trends. Facilitated by film critic and activist Moinuddin Khaled, local film enthusiasts took part in the discussion.
The three-day programme ended with screening of two local fantasy films- Zahir Raihan’s Behula, based on Hindu myth of Behula and Lakhindar, and Khan Ataur Rahman’s folk fantasy film Arun Barun Kiranmala.
