Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged everyone to refrain from saying anything that would make the army questionable or controversial.
“They are now on field to maintain law and order ahead of the upcoming national election,” Quader said while addressing an electioneering rally at Ataturka High School ground in Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni district yesterday afternoon.
The AL leader then pointed at BNP, saying, “You earlier made controversial the Election Commission, judiciary department and law enforcing agencies including police. Don’t make the army controversial.”
According to a report by The Daily Star, Quader warned that a vested quarter could create anarchy from the early hours of voting day, and advised the people to remain alert so that no ‘evil forces’ can mar the election atmosphere.
He also urged the leaders and activists of the AL-led grand alliance to unite and work towards further development of the country.
Army personnel began election protocol yesterday in order to help ensure a peaceful atmosphere and maintain law and order across the country for the December 30 polls.
The troops are to perform duties alongside law enforcers till January 2, and are also expected to “extend all-out support” to the Election Commission for holding a free and fair election.
According to an Inter Services Public Relations statement on Saturday, the army will be deployed in 389 upazilas while navy personnel in 18 coastal upazilas.
