Motorcades of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Isalm Alamgir and two other leaders came under attack in Thakurgaon, Bogura and Chuadanga districts when they were electioneering in for the upcoming general elections, reports The Daily Star.
Mirza Fakhrul went to his hometown yesterday when some 40-50 men attacked the motorcade at 1:00pm, said Syrul Kabir Khan, a press wing staff of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul’s personal secretary Eunus Ali told The Daily Star there was a police van parked nearby when the attack took place at Danarhat area, Thakurgaon Sadar.
District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Md Kaes said that the attack was carried in front of Awami League office at Danarhat.
In Bogura, the motorcade of Golam Mohammad Siraj, who is contesting for the Bogura-5 constituency, came under the attack at Hukumalir Mor when it was heading towards Dhunat Bazar in Dhunat upazila of the district.
The incident occurred around 10:20am when around 25 people attacked the motorcade with sharp weapons.
Four microbuses were vandalised and sixteen of Siraj’s supporters were injured in the incident.
The BNP candidate claimed the attackers were supporters of the ruling Awami League and its student front Chhatra League.
However, sub-inspector of Dhunat Police Station Shafikul Islam confirmed the incident but he denied to make any comments on the attackers.
The injured were taken to various hospitals, Siraj said.
In Chuadanga, a BNP contestant from Chuadanga-1 constituency, Sharifuzzaman said he was attacked during his election campaign in Alamdanga upazila last night.
“A group of people shouting Joy Bangla slogans attacked us in Munshiganj bazar around 9:30pm,” Sharifuzzaman was quoted as saying.
He claimed that 10 people were hurt and two microbuses were vandalised in the attack, our Kushtia correspondent reports.
Sharifuzzaman blamed Abdul Hannan, joint secretary of Jehala Union unit of Awami League, for the attack and informed the incident to local returning officer.
