Suppose you are a great female worker and that you are better at your job than the male employees. Now, imagine that if you break the sales record for your position, then you can earn $60,000 while a man doing the same thing can earn $90,000. Does not really sound that fair, does it?
That is exactly why Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Becky Sauerbrunn from the United States women’s national soccer team in partnership with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, filed a wage-discrimination lawsuit, against the U.S. Soccer Federation.
By revealing monetary figures from the federation’s financial reports, it was discovered that female soccer players earn 25% of what a man earns even though they generated a hefty $20 million more in revenue in 2015.
Of course, there are some key differences between the pay structure between the men’s and women’s team. Top players on the women’s team earn about $72,000 a year in exchange for playing at least 20 games a year, while the men do not have a definite base salary. Hence, some of their income is definite.
If the women’s team win the games, then they can earn up to a $100,000 including bonuses, while the men’s team who are also required to play at least 20 games can earn up to $260, 00 if they win.
