Picking out a birthday gift can be annoying. Then when you express your annoyance to the birthday boy/girl, and they go “It’s okay as long as you’re here”, it is even more ANNOYING. However, the five-year-old’s smile on an eighteen-year-old’s face that shows up after they get the perfect gift is totally worth it. Yours truly had a really hard time picking out a gift for her friend a few days back, and walked in circles in Bashundhara Shopping Mall for three hours. Well, at least she knew what not to get! Here is a nice little list for you, so that the next time you go gift shopping, you totally know what not to get too!

    2 Mugs
I know they sound simple and useful, but trust me, they are not! Why? Because the person you are giving it to, will probably get one from someone else too, and also probably has a huge set of birthday mugs he has collected as gifts over the years. I mean, if you step in to my house, it will seem like I am a crazy mug-collector, but I am not. I just got a lot of mugs for birthdays.

    2 T-shirts
Unless your friend is that guy who always keeps repeating the same three T-shirt, you might as well stay away from this gift. Their mom is probably going to buy them a nice floral printed shirt anyway.

    2 Showpieces
There is only one reason to not get them and that one reason is enough- THEY ARE USELESS. Moms and dads buy tons of showpieces to decorate their households anyways, so the gift is more like it is for the parents than it is for your friend. Plus, what is your friend even going to do with a tiny angel statue made from crystal (unless that is your friend’s “kink”).

    • Store-bought cards: Cards are really sweet when you make them yourself, but when you buy a cheap store-bought cards, that have generic messages or wishes that you can probably find on Google, it loses its title of being the “gift from the heart”.

    2 Cheap perfumes
This one is something tricky because some people tend to like perfumes or body sprays as gifts. However, most people I know do not prefer it because when you gift someone a perfume, it almost seems as if you are indirectly telling them that they are a stinky skunk.

    2 Diaries
People get these every new year from banks. Some even get one every week or every month, if one of their parents is a doctor.
