Desk report: Devastating river erosion has started with the increasing water of Padma river in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi,reports the Daily Observer.
At least nine villages on the banks of the river have lost about 30 feet wide and about 10 kilometers stretch of crop land has been devoured by Padma. At this moment, the only educational institution of the area, Chakrajapur High School, is going to be victim of erosion of the river.Jinnat Ali, Upazila Parishad Chairman, Shaheen Reza, Executive Officer visited the threatened areas, including the school on Thursday. About 8 hundred farmers have been affected in the river erosion.Damaged was noticed in nine villages- Kishorepur, Gokulpur, Jotkadirpur, Dewarkadi Pur, Malian Dah, Tiktiqi Para, Chakrajapur, Kalidas Khali and Lakkhi Nagar.Shaheen Reza, Bagha UNO, ordered the local Chakrajapur union chairman Azizul Azam to find a suitable place to shift the school. Among others, Upazila Parishad’s female Vice-Chairman Farhana Dil Afroz Rumi, Gargagpur UP chairman Alhaj Nazrul Islam, Bausa UP Chairman Shafiur Rahman Shafiq, Upazila Assistant Education Officer Mahmudur Rahman Khan and local journalists, including four journalists of Bagha Press Club, were present.
