The number of road accidents has leaped all on a sudden. The matter needs to be understood. But why has the number shot up this way? Accidents have long been taking place in Bangladesh for years. They increased at times, while their number dropped in other occasions. Many accidents could be resisted in the past. A vehicle driver used to remain safe despite an individual dying or being injured in an accident, which it not happening now. No one would step forward to protest such accidents or help the victims, but many are doing so these days. Many such accidents used to be hushed up, but now every incident is being published by the press—a move that cannot be termed bad. This is a positive side as we are coming to know who are being the victims. Our movement has been going on for the 24 years now. Bus owners and drivers are not giving a congenial atmosphere for the commuters. The government did not dare to advance in this regard. Law ministry said a new law is being is formulated. Why are not our suggestions over the issue being accepted? They call it Motor Vehicle Act, but we term it Motor Vehicle and Road Safety Act. If the matter of road safety is not included in the act, who will oversee it? If the matter is incorporated in the law, there will be a figure of how many people die in road crashes. Statistics over the deaths has to be preserved right. Well, that issue leads to damages for the victims and implementation of laws related to accidents. We, the passengers and pedestrians, too, need to be aware. Road is a dangerous place. I can die anytime for my own carelessness while using roads. We also have to do our job when there is obligation to implement relevant laws for those breaching them.
