India had always been the only major supplier to Bangladesh, for Onion. But, imports stopped due to Onion price hike in India. Thus, doubling the price of Onion in Bangladesh market as well, informed Commerce Secretary Shuvashish Bashu. Also, Bangladesh has suffered big internal agricultural production losses due to this year’s flooding, and similar shortages prevails. Meanwhile, onion price is comparatively low in Egypt. But, the transportation cost is much higher from the countries in that region. If the powerful global companies take bulk-initiatives, Bangladeshi market may stabilize soon, added Shuvashish Bashu. Currently, a business giant & experienced importer, S Alam Group has taken the first initiative of importing 10 thousand tons of onions, for the cause.
