DAE targets 7 lakh MT Boro output in Kishoreganj

    DOT Desk: The Depart-ment of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken a scheme to cultivate Boro paddy in 13 upazilas of the district this season, reports The Daily Observer.
    According to sources at the DAE, a total of 1,64,317 hectares of land would be brought under the cultivation in the district with a production target of 6,60,953 tonnes of rice.
    Of the total, 20,841 ha would be brought under hybrid variety, 1,43,240 ha under high-yielding variety and 236 ha under local variety. District Training Officer of Kishoreganj DAE Sadeque Ibn Shams said there is no shortage of Boro seedlings in the district. The local farmers have already started transplantation of the seedlings, and in the meantime, about 1,44,580 ha have been cultivated.
    Of those, 21,850 ha were brought under hybrid variety, 1,22,390 ha under HYV and 335 ha under local variety. The plantation of seedlings will be continuing up to the third week of February, he said.
    To make the programme a success, 4,458 tonnes of high-quality seeds of Boro paddy like BR-14, 16 and 26, BRRI Dhan-28, 29, 50, 58, 59, 64, 66, 67, 69, 72, 74 and 81, Bina Dhan-10, Hybrid SL8H and other hybrid varieties are being distributed to the farmers at reasonable rates through Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation and private firms approved by seed certification agency of the government.
    The authorities concerned have taken adequate steps for ensuring smooth supply of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, technical assistance and other inputs to the Boro paddy growers at the grassroots level while commercial banks, other financial institutions and NGOs provided easy term agriculture loans in this connection.
