A book that sees a unique launch

UNB:When Mondip Gharai decided to launch his book in Ekushey Boi Mela, he faced the dilemma of choosing between a normal programme and a lavish ceremony.
But Mondip, a senior assistant secretary, had other idea. He decided to go ahead with a ceremony, albeit an unconventional one.
The programme held at a Dhaka restaurant on Thursday had no chief guest or special guest. Rather, three street children – Miraj, Tanjila, and Raju aged 10-12 – launched ‘Olpo Golpo’.
“I want to amalgamate the world of writing and social works,” Mondip said. “So, I decided to bring in the street children, spend some time with them, give them gifts and involve them with the book.”
Twenty-one percent of the book’s revenue will be used for the education of the street children, he said. One of the 21 short stories in 48-page book is about the children.
‘Olpo Golpo’ has been published by Borshadupur Prokashoni. Its publisher Tonmoy lauded the initiative. “This is the most unconventional book launch I’ve seen. I’m very happy to be part of it,” he said.
The children were elated, too. Miraj said he enjoyed the unique experience. “It was a fun,” he said. “We had lots of food and spoke with many people and unveiled the cover of the book.”
Mondip said it was the first-of-its-kind book launch in the country. “I hope this will encourage others to stand by the street children in any way they can,” he said.
‘Olpo Golpo’ is available at Borshadupur’s stall (296-297) for Tk 150.
