Highest number of B’deshis legalised in UAE

    DOT Desk: Among foreign workers, highest number of Bangladeshis were legalized in the United Arab Emirates, foreign ministry officials, reports The New Age. Out of 1,00,000 expatriates who were legalized during a recent amnesty, 60,000 were Bangladeshis, foreign office director general Md Nazrul Islam told New Age on the sidelines of a Sensitization Workshop on Migration and Rights, hosted by the International Organization for Migration at a hotel in the capital.
    Nazrul Islam said that over 700,000 Bangladeshi workers were currently working in the UAE.
    On August 31, the UAE declared two months’ amnesty that was later extended twice.
    Speaking at the workshop, government officials, migrant rights activists and recruiting agents called for ensuring fair and ethical recruitment of workers for overseas jobs.
    They called for establishing accountability of the receiving as well as the sending countries to make the recruitment process fair and transparent.
    In his closing remarks, Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training director general Salim Reza sought international community’s support in ensuring safe migration from Bangladesh.
    Expatriate Welfare and Overseas employment ministry secretary in charge Rownaq Jahan reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure safe migration from Bangladesh.
    BAIRA president Benjir Ahmed and secretary general Shamim Ahmed Chowedhury Noman, labour leaders, civil society members and representatives of international organizations spoke.
