Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of former Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, was found guilty in the New Eskaton double murder case. The court said it sentenced Rony to life imprisonment and had also fined Tk 50,000.
After delivering the verdict, Judge Md Monjurul Imam said the highest penalty for this case is capital punishment, but the court was merciful considering the physical and mental condition of the convict. According to the charge sheet, Rony was at a drunken state when he fired shots at Rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub on April 13, 2015. Hakim succumbed to his injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 15; while Yakub died on April 23. Hakim’s mother Monowara Begum filed a case on April 15, 2015 against Rony and detectives charged him with double murder on July 21, 2015. He was indicted March 6, 2016.
