TIB’s response to ACC findings on Corruption Perceptions Index 2018

    Dr. Iftekharuzzaman speaks to DOT
The Chairman of Anti Corruption Commision, Iqbal Mahmud said that ‘TIB report is unacceptable if causes of rising graft are not addressed’ in resopnse to the The Corruption Perceptions Index 2018 unveiled by TIB yesterday.
In response to the abovementioned comment made by the ACC Chairman, the Executive Director of TIB, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman spoke to Daily Our Time and said that by considering the major elements used to make the report anyone can understand why we did not achieve a well score in the Index. The lower or mid level graft cases was not the deciding factor in the index, while the high level corruptions such as Share Market Scam, Bank Loan Scandals, Loan Default was the core matter. The accused persons in these sort of big scandals stay themselves outside the ambit of the law by abusing their political and State’s power.
However, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman acknowledged that the ACC has become more active than last years, though there is a limit on their actvity. Their activity mainly expresses in lower or mid level graft cases. On the other hand the people who somehow connected with high level politicians or State’s Power, the ACC has been failed to showthe same activeness. It is evident from the many scenarios that the property of the people who is involved in State’s Power has always increased. He further commented, that there is no doubt that we have some laws and institution established by those laws. Althogh in practice the institution does not play adequate effective roles. Specfically the ACC alone can not control the corruption. The other institutions like Law Enforce Forces, Judiciary, Administrative bodies also need to give more effort to counter the corruption. In addition to, the people working in these insitituiion also involve in the corruption or be lenient to the corrupt people.
In conclusion he stated “After all, we think, we could do better in the index but due to the above mentioned reasons it did not happened”.
