Low quality mobile phone sets harming users’ health

DOT Desk: Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumer Association on Saturday urged the government to strictly monitor and enforce mobile phone handset standards, reports The New Age.
High radiation from low quality mobile phone handsets is harming users physically and mentally, speakers said at a seminar hosted by BMPCA at the National Press Club.
High radiation causes headache, pain, insomnia, memory loss, fatigue and pain in ears and impairs hearing, they said.
BMPCA president Mohiuddin Ahmed requested the government to create a commission for certifying mobile phone handsets’ radiation level before allowing their marketing.
He requested the government to set the guidelines for controlling radiation and protecting health and rights of mobile phone users.
He advised the government to follow International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines and withdraw more harmful handsets from the market.
Seminar speakers demanded making it mandatory for mobile phone operators and the handset sellers to spend for raising public awareness about the harmful consequences of radiation from low quality mobile phone handsets.
Speaking as the chief guest, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University pro-vice chancellor professor Shahidullah Sikder said that radiation from mobile phone handsets could adversely affect fertility, increase blood pressure and cause miscarriage and diabetes.
Poribesh Bachao Andolon chairman Abu Naser Khan said that Bangladesh was headed to silent genocide by electro-magnetic radiation and food poisoning.
Gana Sanghati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that people need to launch mass movement to sensitize the government to discharge its mandatory responsibility to protect citizens’ rights.
Jahangirnagar University professor Kabirul Basher said that excessive use of mobile phones could cause depression.
