Reforms in local government level should be made before this election

Dr. Tofail Ahmed speaks to DOT :
The by-polls for the DNCC mayoral post were supposed to be held on February 26 last year. A High Court bench stayed, for six months, the election after hearing two separate writ petitions on January 14 last year. However, the High Court bench has now cleared the way to hold the by-election by withdrawing the stay order. Hence, the by-election to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held on February 28, the Election Commission has decided. The nomination forms will be scrutinized on February 2, while the candidates will have till February 9 to withdraw candidacy. The Upazila Parishad Election will also be held across the country in five phases. “The first phase of polls may take place on March 8 or 9.
In this regard, Dr. Tofail Ahmed spoke to Daily Our Time and said that necessary reforms in local government level should be made in terms of existing laws before this election to take place. The laws are separate from one another and there is no co-ordination in between; which should be replaced by a single law.
