13 killed as truck overturns on Cumilla brick kiln mess

    At least 13 workers were killed and two others injured after a coal-laden truck skidded off and overturned on a mess at a brick kiln in Chouddagram upazila of Cumilla early yesterday, reports Teh Daily Star.
    The deceased are: Ranjit Chandra Roy, 30; Md Morsalin, 18; Torun Chandra Roy, 25; Md Selim, 28; Md Masum, 18; Biplob, 19; Monoranjan Roy, 19; Sankar Chandra Roy, 22; Dipu Chandra Roy, 19; Amit Chandra Roy, 20; Mrinal Chandra Roy, 21; Bikash Chandra Roy, 28 and Kanak Chandra Roy, 34. All the victims  were from Joldhaka upazila of Nilphamari, Abdullah Al-Mamun, additional superintendent of Cumilla police, told our local correspondent.
    The accident took place after the driver of a coal-laden truck lost control over the steering around 5:30am in Narayanpur village of Gholpasha union in the upazila, the police official said.
    The truck skidded off and overturned on a mess at a brick kiln, leaving 13 workers dead on the spot and two others injured, he said adding that the vehicle was overloaded.
    The workers were sleeping in the mess when the accident occurred, said Ratan Kumar Nath, assistant director of fire service office in Cumilla.
    The injured were undergoing treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital and the bodies were kept at the hospital morgue.
    Cumilla District Commissioner Abul Fazal Mir visited the spot and announced compensation of Tk 20,000 each for the victims’ families.
