Dr Maleka Banu speaks to DOT :
We have talked to the concerned ministry about stopping torture on female migrant workers. We have also placed our recommendations in this regard. We have also talked to the High Commission for enhancing language proficiency and job training prior to sending them abroad.
The female migrant workers should be trained up how and where to seek help during any emergency. Then many problems will be solved. Therefore, the female migrant workers should be trained up properly.
The High Commission should heed their grievances with all seriousness and take necessary steps. If any person tortures any female migrant worker abroad, he or she will have to face trail as per the laws of the country. We have nothing to do in this respect. However, we will have to make sure that the grievances are lodged properly. Adequate workforce should be employed in the embassies to listen to the grievances.
Our recruiting agencies send female workers abroad with wrong information. The female workers are sent abroad without ensuring workplace safety. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure workplace safety of the migrant workers.
The workers will go abroad on their own even if the government stops sending them on the ground of workplace torture. You cannot deter them from going abroad. Therefore, the government must pay heed to the workplace safety. The government must hold talks with its counterparts about workplace safety before sending them abroad.
