DOT Desk: The Shah Amanat International Airport authority in Chattogram has said they will maintain zero tolerance against smuggling in drugs through the airport and will remain alert to thwart any such attempt by the passengers.
Security at the airport has been strengthened to ensure safe journey of the passengers. As most passengers using this airport are working abroad including the Middle East countries, the civil aviation authority looks to make sure the image of the country is not tarnished any way, reports The Financial Express BD. Manager of the Chittagong International Airport, Wing Commander ABM Sarwar-e-Zaman, made clear the stance in a meeting with the representatives of Chattogram Association in Oman.
Mr Chowdhury said that the Bangladeshi expatriates in Oman often become targets of investigation by the Oman security forces as many from Bangladesh have been arrested along with Yaba, hemp and other intoxicants. These people take these drugs to Oman from Bangladesh in packets of foods, toothpaste etc, he said. It harms Bangladesh citizens’ image abroad.
The airport manager said intelligence activities would now be further strengthened. The airport authority would also seek assistance from the Bangladesh Embassy in Oman to collect addresses of those arrested and thereby identify the local drug smugglers here.
