‘Prime suspect’ of Xulhaz-Tanoy murders nabbed in Tongi

    In a significant development, police on Tuesday night arrested the main suspect from Tongi in Gazipur district in a case filed over the murders of LGBT magazine editor Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tanoy in 2016, reports UNB.
    Assadullah, the arrestee, was caught during a raid by the counter-terror police in Gazipur’s Tongi 6pm Tuesday, said Md Obaidur Rahman, additional deputy commission of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
    The 25-year-old is a member of Ansarullah Bangla Team, banned militant outfit. He used to operate his militant activities using fake names including Fakhrul, Faisal, Jakir and Sadik, police said.

    Acting on a tip off, a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) raided the area and arrested the accused in the night, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.

    However, police did not disclose the identity of the arrestee immediately.

    Xulhaz Mannan, editor of LGBT magazine Roopbaan, and his friend Mahbub Tanoy, an activist of theatre group Loknatya Dal, were hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants at Kalabagan area on 25 April, 2016.
