Earlier, there were no facilities in Bangladesh that could detect and diagnose all types of genetic diseases, including different cancers but thanks to the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), the country’s scientific examination has leveled up. Yeafesh Osman; Minister of science and technology inaugurated the laboratory located in the capital Dhaka.
The genome sequencing laboratory has been installed with the latest Novaseq-6000 machine which can detect a large number of genetic mutations and different cancers. Chief scientist of the new laboratory Dr Md Selim Khan said whole-genome sequencing requires determining the accurate order of the 3 billion chemical bases that make up human DNA and offers the most comprehensive evaluation of differences between patients’ normal and cancer genome which could help the rising number of cancer patients in the country.
