Dr. Delwar Hossain speaks to DOT :
Bangladesh has been bearing the burden of sheltering Rohingyas for a long time. Meanwhile, the international community has not been taking any responsibility like they had promised they would. When the Rohingyas entered the country, many international organizations also came but did not stay. Bangladesh has been trying to relay this to the world.
Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen has been trying to request the international community to come forward. Still, he said that they are much more malleable now than they were in the past. We know that China and Russia have their own stance in the Rohingya issue, but there has recently been a change in that stance. As the Rohingya issue is a complicated one, perhaps that is why Myanmar has not yet come forward. Neither does it seem that they would do so easily. In order to do so we have to escalate our diplomatic effort.
We have to wait for a solution to this Rohingya issue; besides, there is no alternative. Nevertheless, a solution has to be found, and that too with the help from the international community. As the current government has been combating this issue from the beginning, it will take whatever decision it feels necessary, and because the incumbent government returned, the road to a definite resolution will be much easier because the trend of all its diplomatic affairs will be maintained. However, greater foreign cooperation is still needed. Diplomatic activities with China and Russia will have to be increased. Strong diplomatic efforts have to continue.
