After Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made his homecoming in an independent Bangladesh back on December in 1972, the country started seeing development to a large extent. Now, Bangladesh is standing tall under the leadership of his daughter Sheikh Hasina, said economist Dr Atiar Rahman. She is now working to make Bangladesh how Bangabandhu dreamt of, said Dr Atiar, also the former of Bangladesh Bank. He was speaking at a TV talkshow on Thursday.
“We can see the leadership quality of Bangabandhu
in his daughter. For instance, Bangladesh’s economic growth in the last fiscal year stood at 7.86%, up from around 4% back in 2008. The poverty rate was 41% a decade ago, which is currently reduced to 21.8%,” he said.
Export volume was of $12 billion back then, compared to $37 billion currently, the economist, said, further giving credit to Hasina for the achievements.
There has also been change in the per capita income, which now exceeds $1,751. In 2008, the size of Bangladesh’s economy was little over $91 billion and it saw more than a threefold rise in the last ten years, Dr Atiar manitained.
Referring to a British firm’s study, he said the figure will jump as high as $1.5 trillion by 2033, when Bangladesh will become the 23rd biggest economy in the world.
Political stability has been in place in the country owing to the leadership Hasina, who also strongly contained militancy especially after the Gulshan café attack, he said further.
