Detectives yesterday arrested a man in connection with a case filed over the gang-rape of a woman in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila on December 31, reports The Daily Star.
The arrestee was identified as Henju Majhi, 29, our Noakhali correspondent reports quoting Zakir Hossain, inspector of DetectiveBranch in Noakhali.
Tipped off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive in Daudkandi upazila of the district and arrested Henju Majhi this morning, said DB Inspector Zakir, also investigation officer of the case.
Henju was arrested based on the information gleaned from the other accused during their interrogation. He had been on the run since the incident came to the fore, he said.
With the arrest today, 11 people were so far arrested over the gang-rape.
Earlier, a total of six accused including Salauddin, Abul Hossain, Mohammad Sohel and Jasim Uddin gave confessional statements over the incident.
On January 5, seven accused — Sohel, Jasim, Badshah Alam Basu, Ruhul Amin, Hasan Ali Bhulu, Swapan and Bechhu — were placed on a five-day remand in the case.
The 35-year-old woman was gang-raped in Subarnachar area in the early hours of December 31, allegedly by 10 to 12 AL activists.
According to the victim, the men entered her home by cutting the fence around her house. They then tied her husband and four children with ropes, after which they took the woman outside the house and raped her.
The victim also said the rapists threatened to kill her husband and children and torch their house if she told anyone about the rape.
The victim’s husband, who was also injured, said the criminals left around 4:00am after beating his wife unconscious and taking Tk 40,000, some gold ornaments and other valuables with them.
