DU to sit with student bodies on DUCSU polls on Jan 10

    DOT Desk: To make a befitting constitution for Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) and Hall union, the University authority have decided to hold a Dialogue with active students’ organizations on January 10, reports The Observer BD.
    Dhaka University (DU) authorities have provided invitation letters to the active student organizations on the campus, for a view-exchange meeting regarding the amendment of the existing DUCSU constitution.
    In the letter, the authorities also requested the organizations to present their recommendations in written regarding the amendment of the existing DUCSU constitution in the meeting to be held on January 10.
    The letters have been issued on Thursday January 3, hours after Supreme Court Appellate Division’s vacationing its earlier order that stayed a High court order asking the DU authorities to take necessary steps within the next six months to hold DUCSU election.
    Former Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr. Mizanur and Provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall made the convener of the committee while other members are Masterda Surja Sen Hall Provost Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall Provost Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Ruqayyah Hall Provost Professor Dr. Zeenat Huda and Shamsunnahar Hall Provost Dr. Supriya Saha. Besides the five-member committee Deputy Registrar Md Moniruzzaman will serve a member secretary for this committee.
    Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman said, “Coincidentally, a five-member committee has been formed on Friday to take suggestions from student organizations regarding the amendment of the existing DUCSU constitution, if necessary, as it was last amended in 1998.”
    The committee will hold an internal meeting in this regard on Monday and the student organizations will present their recommendations in the next meeting on January 10.
    The ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and all left-leaning students organizations got the invitation letters though the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) didn’t get any letter.
    JCD DU unit joint organizing secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said, “we didn’t get any letter regarding the amendment of DUCSU constitution or any meeting. We want DUCSU polls and University authority should ensure political coexistence and our security in the campus before the election.
    University proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani said, “All the parties have been informed. We want everyone’s opinion and cooperation”.
    “DUCSU election is important to make the University completely democratic. We want DUCSU election and will move for DUCSU if it be Undone.’ said BCL DU unit President Sanjit Chandra das.
    Regarding this, Umme Habiba Benojir, president of Bangladesh Students Federation DU unit said, “Everyone can participate in Dialogue, but whether everyone can participate in elections is a question. We hope that the administration will announce the schedule soon and ensure the coexistence of all the apolitical parties in the campus. ”
    It is to be noted that 31 March 2018 was declared as the possible date for holding DUCSU polls.
