Lawmakers to take oath today, new cabinet on Sunday

    The newly-elected parliament members will be sworn in today at 11am; furthermore, the new cabinet may also take oath on Sunday, as revealed by several ministers, reported The Daily Star.
    Talking to reporters during a dialogue with Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu revealed that the government would formally announce the date.
    The gazette on the MPs-elects was published on Tuesday, with details of 298 MPs as per the EC’s approval.
    Seeking anonymity, a senior AL minister told The Daily Star that the new cabinet would be sworn in on Sunday.
    The Election Commission (EC) revealed that it had sent a letter to the parliament secretary for taking necessary preparation to organize the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected lawmakers, according to EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed.
    According to the article 148 (2A) of the Constitution, the newly elected members of parliament will be obliged to take oath within three days after the publication of election results through official gazette, or else their memberships will cease to exit. AL General Secretary Obaidul Qauder had previously said the process to form the new government was likely to be completed by January 10.
    In the December 30 parliamentary, the AL-led Grand Alliance won 288 seats against the BNP-led Oikyafront’s seven.
    Three independent candidates also became victorious.
    The election in Brahmanbaria-2 was suspended as voting at three polling centers was suspended over violence. Polling in those centres will be held on January 9. Polls in Gaibanda-3 were rescheduled for January 27 following the death of a candidate.
