Garment workers staged demonstration on a road in Hatirjheel area of Dhaka after two of their fellows died in a road accident in Malibagh area yesterday afternoon.
The agitating workers also vandalised 40 vehicles and torched two others protesting the accident, reports The Daily Star.
Two garment workers — Meem, 13, and Nahid Parvin Poly, 19, — died as a bus of ‘Suprabhat Paribahan’ hit them in Malibagh rail crossing area around 1:30pm, said Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost. Upon receiving the news, several hundred workers of garment factory ‘MH’ took to the street, carrying out the vandalism and torching two other vehicles, witnesses said.
Two units of firefighters rushed to the scene to douse the blaze, said Rana Mia, an official of the fire service and civil defence headquarters.
The workers were staging demonstration as of 6:00pm.
Meanwhile, the bodies were sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy, Inspector Bachchu said.
Police arrested the driver and seized the bus, Shiblee Noman, additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said adding that additional industrial policemen were sent to the spot to take the situation under control.
