Fair elections uncertain in the present context

Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Former Election Commissioner  :
The festive mood, which was present in the 2008 general elections, is found to be absent this time around. The last parliamentary elections held in 2014 is questionable.
All of us know the reason behind the absence of festive mood centering on the upcoming parliamentary elections. The 2008 election was different, for which it was held amid a festive environment. I am doubtful whether elections like 2008 ever be held.
This time we all hope for a free, fair and credible election. However, the environment speaks otherwise. The Election Commission is facing some obstacles, as it did not do the necessary homework.
We cannot say for sure whether the upcoming election will be a free and fair one. Let us see which way the wind blows. Noting cannot be said in advance. Every political party has a right to lodge complaints with the EC. It is the responsibility of the EC to settle the complaint. The solution lies in showing equal treatment to all. It now remains to be seen how much free and fair election the EC can ensure.
