What more can be done to ensure good governance?

Ambassador Muhammad Zamir speaks to DOT :
Dr. Kamal Hossain has made certain comments about the future procedure pertaining to the forthcoming election in which he expressed his belief that there is no good governance in the country. “If the Election Commission (EC) fails to hold the December 30 elections in a fair manner, the consequences will be terrifying. And if the people cannot exercise their voting rights then it will be a blow on the independence of the country which is similar to sedition”, said Dr Hossain.
The current government believes in freedom of expression. In this country, one must remember that our PM Sheikh Hasina has taken certain positive and constructive steps pertaining to inclusion of transparency and accountability in the government’s functioning system. This has taken forward the promulgation of the Right to Information Act 2009 also. Through the creation of an extended approach to this, today we have nearly about 30 private TV channels and more than 50 digital newspapers online. This has enabled Bangladeshi population, wherever they may reside; to have access to information and to share this information through internet and social media. This has created a paradigm where citizens can share their views and have a positive approach towards good governance.
Within the context of political matrix, we have currently a situation where the government of Sheikh Hasina since the beginning of November of this year, has sat for discussion with different political parties as to how to overcome the challenges regarding a free, fair and inclusive election. In no other country, the head of the government has sat down to discuss with different political parties as to how to create a conducive atmosphere before election. The citizens have also seen that how the government has encouraged the EC to agree to have observers who can come and see for themselves the election procedure. Dr. Hossain has also sat with diplomats of 23 countries to inform them about the country’s current political situation ahead of the 11th parliamentary elections.
Now after all that the current government has done for ensuring good governance in this country, what more Oikyo Front leaders are expecting from this government to create a level playing field for this election – is a big question now.
