BNP candidate and former minister Abdul Moyeen Khan came under attack while electioneering amid the celebrations of Victory Day in Narsingdi. Moyeen, a BNP Standing Committee member, blamed the ruling Awami League for the attack, which occurred in the district’s Panchdona Bazar area around 12:30pm yesterday.
However, local Awami League leaders could not be reached to counter the allegation, but some of the party’s activists were recognised chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans and carrying rods, reports BDnews.
Some BNP leaders and activists who were present at the scene with Moyeen were injured but Khan was unhurt. He was not immediately available for comment.
Moyeen Khan is running in the December 30 election as the paddy-sheaf candidate from the Narsingdi-2 constituency, where Anwarul Ashraf Khan is vying for with the Awami League ticket.
Bahauddin Bhuiyan, an aide to Moyeen, alleged that the supporters of Awami League carried out the attacks amid a peaceful campaign event.
Moyeen was talking to locals and distributing leaflets.
“Then the leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League carried out the attack. They also shot at the BNP men,” he said, claiming that at least 50 BNP supporters, including some locals, were injured in the attack.
Moyeen fled the spot and took shelter at a local shop along with his supporters. Some unidentified youths attacked them again with makeshift rods and locally-made weapons. He was finally forced to leave the area, according to the locals, who witnessed the incident.
Posters were damaged and cars were vandalised and had their windows broken, our correspondent reports.
The incident has been reported and police are investigating, said Abu Taher, chief of Madhabdi Police Station.
