Dying fishes afloat in Gulshan Lake

Around a week ago, fishes in Gulshan Lake started floating dead and the incident increased badly during the last couple of days allegedly due to water pollution, reports The Daily Sun.
Locals said huge number of dead fishes floating on the lake water which is blackish and stinking, causing immense sufferings to nearby residents, shopkeepers and pedestrians. Dead fishes, include tengra, pangas, silver carp, ruhit and catla, were seen at different points along the lake,
Mohammad Manik, a hawker on the bank of the lake at Gudaraghat, told the daily sun on Thursday that dead fishes were floating on the water body for the last seven days.
The dead fishes spread bad odour making life miserable for residents and commuters, he added.
Some hawkers said that the lake was leased to a person, who is cultivating fishes there, but a Rajuk official concerned said he is ignorant of the ownership of the fishes.
RAJUK Deputy Director Mamun Mia, who is responsible to watch over the lake, told the daily sun that he is unaware of dead fishes in the lake.
Asked whether it was leased out to anyone, the RAJUK deputy director said, “I am on the duty here for the last six months. As per my knowledge, the lake was not leased out to anybody.”
Locals said dead fishes float on the water body during every winter but this year, the dead fishes doubled the number compared to the previous year.
Pollution might be the reason behind the death of the huge number of fishes, they added.
