Viqarunnisa teacher suspended over ninth grader’s suicide

Sayeed Muhammad of DOT :  In the wake of raging protests over the suicide of a ninth grader, the authorities of Dhaka’s Viqarunnisa Noon School and College (VNSC) have suspended Zinnat Ara, the morning shift in-charge of the institution’s main campus.
They also served a show-cause notice on her, said the institution’s Governing Body Chairman Golam Ashraf Talukder told reporters, confirming that Zinnat was also ordered on Monday night to refrain from duties from yesterday.
Ashraf also said she was told not to resume her duty until further notice from them.
Zinnat was asked to respond to the notice within seven days, following which the managing committee would take next measures to this end, he added.
Meanwhile, Principal Nazneen Ferdous said the action was taken in an effort to ensure a proper investigation into the death of Aritree Adhikari.
“Since all the fingers are pointed at her (Zinnat), she has been removed from the post temporarily,” the principal further said.

Earlier yesterday, two probe committees were formed over the self-killing of the schoolgirl. She hanged herself from a ceiling fan, at her home, in the Shantinagar area of Dhaka on Monday.

The shocking incident took place after she was reportedly caught cheating in a school examination, causing her father to be summoned to the school, whose authorities allegedly humiliated him.

The 15-year-old girl’s family accused her teachers including the principal of insulting her and the parents of because she had allegedly cheated during an exam on Sunday.
