Prof Dr Tajul Islam speaks to DOT :
Aritree Adhikari, a Viqarunnisa student, was found dead — her body hanging from a ceiling fan – in her room. Principal of the school allegedly insulted her and the parents of the ninth-grader because she had cheated in an exam.
Sometimes adolescent girls and boys like Aritree are found to commit suicide. Most of them commit suicide after being insulted and defeated.
It is illegal to an enter exam hall with a mobile phone. Did the punishment exceed the crime? Wasn’t there any chance to rectify the situation? The teachers should predict the consequences of insulting a student in front her parents. Moreover, how can a child restrain herself if she is threatened with rustication?
The ill-fated student faced the double whammy of rustication threat and humiliation before her parents. Some educational institutions fail to instill fortitude, tolerance and grit among their students. The urge to study in a so-called top school and obtain good grades shatters the life of the students like Aritree. How many students like Aritree will become victims of cruelty of exam system, regimented discipline and blind rat race?
