340MW more power to be imported from India

Desk Report: Bangladesh has decided to import an additional 340 megawatts of electricity from India under G2G through Surjomoni-Cumilla north link.
Power Division Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus disclosed the decision yesterday to journalists after emerging from the 15th Bangladesh-India Joint Steering Committee meeting on issues relating to the energy sector.
The meeting, also attended by Indian power ministry Secretary Kumar Bhalla, was held at a hotel in Sylhet city.
Bangladesh is already importing 160 megawatts of electricity from India through the Surjomoni-Cumilla north link. Bangladesh during the Joint Steering Committee meeting has urged India not to impose any duties including value added tax (VAT) on the import of power from India, Dr Kaikaus said.
He also said the meeting discussed the issue about setting up of a power transmission line through India to enable Bangladesh import electricity from Bhutan and Nepal and the prospect of export of electricity from Bangladesh to India.
Earlier, on Monday, the Bangladesh-India Joint Working Group (JWG) at a meeting in Sylhet discussed the installation of an Indian power transmission line through Bangladesh to supply electricity to India’s Bihar state from Arunachal Pradesh, another Indian state.
