Another feather in Summit’s hat

Sayeed Muhammad: In yet another achievement as a private power company , Singapore-based electricity giant Summit Power Limited has bagged the “Fast-Track Power Plant of the Year” award in recognition of its contribution to the country’s power sector.
At the annual event of Asian Power Awards, also known as the “Oscar of the Power Industry”, held in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday , Summit Gazipur II Power Limited (300 MW) won the silver award, says a press release.
Summit had completed construction-to-power generation of this 300 MW power plant only in nine months starting in late December last year.
Vice Chairman of Summit Group Latif Khan along with Managing Director Eng Mozzammel Hossain and Project Head Engr Abdul Hakim of Summit Gazipur I & II Power received the award.
Under the fast-track category, Tsetsii Wind Farm powered by Singaporean company Vestas Asia Pacific won the gold award and Kalsel-1 2×100 MW Coal Fired Steam Power Plant Project by PT Tanjung Power Indonesia received the bronze award.
The development came just two weeks after the company, for the same power plant, was conferred on “Best Private Power Generation Company” award in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the award to Summit Group Chairman Muhammed Aziz Khan the “Power & Energy Week 2018” in recognition of the fastest implemented power plant located in Gazipur’s Kodda area.
On December 10 last year, Summit Gazipur II Power Ltd had signed a project agreement with the government to supply 300 MW of electricity for a period of 15 years.
According to the agreement, Summit Gazipur II Power Ltd was expected to commence commercial operation by mid-2018.
At that time, it was also supposed to be the largest reciprocating engine-run power plant in Bangladesh supplying 300 MW to the national grid.
In 2011, Summit Narayanganj Power Ltd (105 MW) was awarded the Gold Award at Asian Power Awards 2011 for Best Fast-Track Power Project for implementing construction-to-generation in 270 days.
