Shahidul Alam seeks High Court bail

Kabir Humayun: Internationally acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam yesterday filed a petition with the High Court seeking bail in a case filed on charge of spreading rumors against the state.
In the petition, Shahidul’s lawyer said that his client would not leave the country if he is granted bail in the case, reports The Daily Star.
He also said the Section 57 of the Information, Communication and Technology Act (ICT Act) does not cover the allegations brought against him in the case.
Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a lawyer for Shahidul Alam, told The Daily Star that the High Court may hold hearing on the bail petition today.
Earlier on September 11, a Dhaka court rejected a bail petition of Shahidul in the same case filed with Ramna Police Station on August 5.
Shahidul, 63, was picked up by plainclothes men from his home in the capital’s Dhanmondi on August 5.
On completion of his seven-day remand, Shahidul was denied bail and sent to jail by a Dhaka court on August 12.
