Hossen Sohel: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that he discussed with United Nations high officials about Bangladesh’s next general election at a meeting at the UN headquarters while Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said on Friday that Fakhrul failed to meet the UN secretary general, reports New Age.
Fakhrul had a meeting with the UN officials including UN assistant secretary general for political affairs Miroslav Jenča at its headquarters in New York at about 8:30pm Bangladesh time on Thursday, party sources said.
After the meeting, Fakhrul told media in New York that he had a meeting with the senior officials of the United Nations and he went to the United Nations at the invitation of UN secretary general Antony Guterres.
Replying to a query, fruitful asked whether anything fruitful could take place in a day.
The issues of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment and transfer of her trial court inside the jail, political persecution of BNP leaders and activists ahead of the general election and ‘polls-time’ neutral government were discussed in the meeting, the party sources said.
Fakhrul who went to Washington from New York was scheduled for Friday to meet US state department officials, party leaders said.
He left Dhaka for New York on September 12.
He may go to London on his way to return home to meet BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, the sources said, adding that Fakhrul was likely to return home on September 16.
Referring to the issue of Fakhrul’s visit to the UN headquarters, Quader said that he could not meet the secretary general, who was staying in Ghana.
