Desk Report: A traditional boat race was held in the Chitra River in Narail district on Saturday to mark the 94th birth anniversary of great artist S M Sultan, reports Daily Observer.
State Minister for Sports Biren Shikder inaugurated the boat race under Sheikh Russel Bridge over the river. This year, as many as 21 boats, including five boats of women and 16 of men, took part in the race.
Race among women competitors was held first where boats, namely- Jalkanya, Jalkumari, Jalkabutor, Kapot-Kapoti and Kathakoli took part. On the other hand, as many as 60 to 70 male racers rode each boat.
Starting about 28 years ago, the regatta in the Chitra River has become a popular festival of the district, even to the people of neighbour districts Jashore, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat.
